First Love
“So is theatre your first love?”
I’ve never learned how to answer this. Perhaps the biblically coded language holds too much implication of an adulterous heart (Revelation 2:4).
The typical asking seems to imply passion over practicality. Our “first love” must be put aside in maturity, even if we still keep mementos of a simpler time.
In that case, it’s awkward to claim immaturity; yes, I am still entrenched in childish things!
I debate undercutting; I tried bookkeeping but acting paid better, but sarcasm doesn’t satisfy.
I’ll never forget interacting with audience members at a full time theatre job; insisting on a different answer to, “what do you do?” I can assure you, you’re looking at it!
Pursuing the arts seems as fleeting as high school sweethearts.
Like the high school sweethearts that end up married, continually pursuing an arts career is met with surprise. It’s not the typical story – all the more fun!
Since theatre is a profession for me, like a first love I’ve grown comfortable. I don’t get nervous to introduce this fresh romance, it’s become an old partner.
…In that sense, sure, we can call theatre my first love. ♥
